Fraud

Protect yourself from scams and card fraud. FDIC Safeguard works with banks when fraud is detected on U.S. payment cards.

Active reminder

FDIC Safeguard will never ask for your full PIN over the phone. We only need your 9-digit Custody ID when contacting you through official channels.

Common types of fraud

Phishing & smishing

Fake emails or text messages that look like they come from your bank or the FDIC. They try to get you to click links or share passwords and card details.

Card skimming & cloning

Devices placed on ATMs or payment terminals that copy card data. Use trusted machines and cover the keypad when entering your PIN.

Account takeover

Criminals gain access to online banking or digital wallets and move funds or request new cards. Enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible.

Romance & investment scams

Fraudsters build trust then ask for money transfers or card payments. Be wary of anyone who pressures you to send funds quickly.

What to do if you suspect fraud
